What to put in your custom flairs. Sweeper keeper needs a few things. Positioning, he needs to be on the top of his box and close enough to his defensive line that a lead pass will easily be cut out by him stepping up to the ball.
Next, foot work if he really wants to play sweeper keepers he needs to play sweeper and play it well. This means training with centerbacks and being able to defend with their body out of the box.
Distribution, these keepers need immaculate passing every pass needs to land on their intended targets passing lane and foot. If not you're allowing a possible snap back shot that will catch you out of place.
SIZE Sweeper keepers are BIG they are scary and decisive. Get big and strong, if you need to take someone out do exactly what Neuer did on Higauin. There's a lot more but I'm drawing a blank right now.
Hope these help. Firstly what do you mean by sweeper keeper? Do you mean it like Valdes at Barcelona where he'd play it around with the defenders or do you mean like Neuer and Germany did where he had to come out of his area numerous times to cover a ball played past the high line of the defenders? Or something else?
I would say that a back 3 isn't the best formation for a sweeper keeper as the middle defender is more suitable playing that role than the keeper would be as they'd occupy each others space and be more easily closed down. Italy used a back 3 at the world cup and Buffon isn't a typical sweeper keeper. 4 defenders would be more a natural formation for a sweeper keeper to play in IMO. If you play a high line then your keeper will be by default a sweeper keeper as you've got to cover nearly half the pitch at times.
I've done it a good bit and would list speed, concentration and reading of the game as vital. Being able to kick well off both feet helps but it's not as crucial as the other 3.
Booting the ball miles out of play and allowing your team to get set defensively whilst you berate your lazy teammates is also an important skill. If you mean to pass the ball around at the back then obviously you'd need to improve the keepers touch, passing under pressure especially off their weak foot. You only mention athleticism and no mention of technical ability or reading of the game so these are the areas I'd look at to improve. One thing I've noticed from playing in goals is that forwards will work an awful lot harder closing down a keeper with the ball than they would a defender in possession so try to replicate that intensity in your training.
The idea is to use him like Neuer, coming out to clear through balls/balls over the top of our back line, which will be, more times than not, pressed higher up the pitch. Kind of like a safety net for our 3 backs pressing higher up the pitch edit this is high school boys varsity, and obviously we are going to be a very attack minded, high pressing team. Also, im just the keeper coach, not the head coach. Our 'starting' keeper is more of a traditional/conservative keeper, very technically sound, not nearly as fast as our 'back up' keeper, who is one of the 2 fastest kids on team. Very athletic and tall as well, good coordination, and intelligent.
It'd be a waste not to take advantage of his speed/athleticism and im hoping he can play this style and offer us something our starting keeper cannot. Because if it works out.nothings guaranteed. Another big thing for sweeper keeper is to have a very well-trusted relationship between coaching staff-keeper and outfield players-keeper. Mistakes will be made and supports/forgiveness will be needed. One last thing, Neuer is an amazing goalkeeper.
You're saying that your backup may fill this role. That's nice and all, but your keeper's first priority should be goalkeeping before sweeping. If you have been following Neuer, he can pull this off because if things mess up (minus redcard-situations) or if he decides to not come out, he's still a world class goalkeeper.
That's just my 2 cent.
